Effects of stem girdling on cone yield and endogenous phytohormones and metabolites in developing long shoots of Douglas-fir ( Pseudotsuga menziesii).

Range-wide chloroplast and mitochondrial DNA imprints reveal multiple lineages and complex biogeographic history for Douglas-fir. Khasa, Jesús Vargas-Hernández, Javier López-Upton, Barry Jaquish, Jean Bousquet.

The breeding goal is to improve traits related to tree size (height, diameter and volume) while maintaining wood relative density near old growth values.
#DOUG FIR SEEDLINGS HOW TO#
Forest Service office for instructions on how to treat a major infestation or if the tree's needles begin to yellow and drop. The Interior Douglas-fir tree breeding program began in 1982 with the objective of producing improved and genetically diverse seed for planting on productive forest land in south-central British Columbia. Contact your county extension agent or regional U.S. Spray smaller trees with a direct stream of water from a garden hose nozzle to remove minor infestations of mites, aphids and caterpillars. The Nursery will also be open to the public for pick up on Saturday, April 29th Saturday, May 13th and Saturday. Inspect the trees routinely for pests and disease. Starting on Monday, April 24th, the State Forest Nursery in Boscawen, NH will be open from 8:00 am to 3:30 pm, Monday through Friday for customers to come in and pick up their seedling orders. If you elect to grow a flat-sided, flat-top Douglas fir hedge rather than allowing the trees to soar naturally, use hedge shears to manicure the outer edges and a chain saw to periodically cut back the trunk tops. When Douglas fir trees are more than 5 feet high, you may cut the lowest branches off flush with the tree trunk using a pruning saw. Prune the tips of a young tree's branches only if necessary to maintain the pyramid form. Thereafter, established trees need supplemental watering only during extended periods of drought.

During the second and third year after planting, continue routine watering when the top inch of soil becomes dry. Continue watering trees weekly during the first year, except for periods when rainfall is sufficient to keep the roots moist. Water newly planted trees promptly, soaking with an open garden hose or multiple buckets of water until the surrounding ground is moist.
